Unfortunately there is a great need. Reasons for relinquishment are numerous! A change in lifestyle or a move to a situation where a pet is not allowed to name just two. The rescued dogs may have been strays with unfound owners, from pounds/shelters or relinquished by their owners who no longer wanted them. Most rescues have the dogs examined by a veterinarian, have the dogs' shots updated, spay/neuter if not already done and treat any medical conditions they may find present. The dogs are placed into private "foster" homes where they become members of the family until a permanent "forever home" is located.
Do you think you are ready for a Basset hound? It is important to carefully consider everything before adding a basset to your family. Are you aware of their characteristics? Do you know what health issues bassets may face? Are you willing to train? Where will you get your basset? BuckBasset has important information available to help you with this decision. Please take some time to review this information. For a successful match between dog and owner it is important to truly know the breed you are interested in.
The Basset As A Pet BuckBasset supports rescue. Please always consider rescuing a basset if you have determined this is the breed for you!
Can you help? Every Basset rescue is in need of assistance in one form or another. If you would like to help please check your local rescue and let them know! Here are just a few of the ways you can be involved in Basset rescue: Adoption - the number one way of helping out a rescue. Fostering - individuals or families who have agreed to open their home and their hearts in order to provide a safe and loving environment for these dogs until a permanent home can be found. Transportation - Often times a dog that is being relinquished needs to travel a distance to get to their new foster home...sometimes it is a lucky hound on his way to his forever home. There is also the need to get hounds to and from vet appointments. Supplies - There is always a need for supplies. Could you donate: collars, leashes, dog food, bowls, toys, crates, etc.? Contact your local rescue to let them know you would like to help! Monetary Donations - Basset (and other breed) rescues are run by volunteers. There are adoption fees but these just begin to cover the medical and other cost incurred by the rescue when taking in a relinquished dog. Many times fees are paid by the rescue's volunteers themselves. All rescues accept donations and most of them are tax deductible. Contact the rescue for more information! Administrative - including advertising, correspondence and marketing.
